Portfolios

Create an new PORTFOLIO WEBSITE!

An online portfolio allows you to publish and present TWO important aspects of the work you do in the class:

1. Your FINISHED PRODUCT

2. The "BEHIND THE SCENES" effort

  • Pre-Production planning

  • Anecdotes and Reflection on the project

BOTH are important to the assessment of your marks - even if your final product has flaws, the understanding and effort you show in your "Behind the Scenes" material can show the learning that actually did take place - and you get marks for LEARNING as well as DOING.

Websites can be created and published in dozens of different ways (straightforward HTML is one of the best). We'll be using GoogleSites because it lets you author and publish online VERY easily.

Step One - START A NEW GOOGLESITE

Begin by logging on to your OCDSB Google Documents account. Go to your GMail page or a new tab in Chrome

  1. Click on the APPS grid in the top right corner

  2. Choose SITES (it should be there somewhere!)

  3. Navigate to the "New Google Sites" page

  4. Hit the big red CREATE "+" button choose to create a NEW Google Site

Step Two - NAME YOUR SITE

  1. Click the words "Untitled Site" in the top left corner. Use your "Last Name First" format with your COURSE and the words "TIJ1O Portfolio" for example - Smith_John_TIJ1O_Portfolio_2019 would be a good name

  2. Change "Your page title" to something more descriptive and professional

Changes you make are saved AUTOMATICALLY as a draft. Changes are not made public until you click the PUBLISH button.

Step Three - CHECK your SHARING OPTIONS

  1. Click the SHARE button at the TOP RIGHT of your site

  2. The "Published" default should read "Anyone at Ottawa-Carleton District School Board can find and view"

  3. Under INVITE PEOPLE, add your teacher's email address so that they can help you to edit your page

  4. Turn OFF "Notify People" and click the blue SEND button

Step Four - PUBLISH your site and FILL IN THE URL FORM

  1. Click the blue PUBLISH button in the top right corner of your site. You need to click this button anytime you want to push your updates out on to the web

  2. You'll see the publish settings dialogue on screen, and will need to click PUBLISH again

  3. Go up to the ARROW at the right side of the blue PUBLISH button and select "View Published Site". A new tab opens up with your website.

  4. COPY the address of your site (The URL in the address bar that starts with the letters https:// )

  5. Click on this link to register your sites and follow the instructions there

That's IT - Once your teacher finds your page, your portfolio website will appear on your class Google SITES page.

You DON'T need to repeat these steps unless you need to start again from scratch.
