In order for students to feel properly supported in their journey towards a future career, we at Oaks Park High School have invested a great deal in ensuring that we have a large and well qualified careers team who are able to meet the needs of each individual student and ensure that we are able to deliver a high quality and stable careers programme.
The nature of our careers team ensures that we have individuals with different areas of expertise in careers education, information, advice and guidance. This means that we can offer highly specialised support for our young people and deliver bespoke programmes through the curriculum and co-curriculum to ensure that students feel prepared for their future. As a team, we provide a broad range of aspirational activities, which support this exploration and the development of skills.
Pastoral teams and form tutors take an active role in leading aspirations lessons, which are delivered through wider curriculum lessons. Also, there are visits, assemblies, talks and fairs which students have the option to attend in order to improve their employability skills and understanding of different careers. This ensures that the team is supplemented by regular employer and industry engagement.

As a careers team, we are regularly held to account by our link governor. It is their role to act as a 'critical friend' to our team, and ensure that we are fulfilling our statutory requirements as outlined in the Gatsby Benchmarks and careers policy updates. This process ensures that the careers team and our programme has the full support of the school's governing body.

As a careers team, we believe that it is essential that our students are able to access expert and independent advice and guidance from an appropriately trained professional during their time at school. This enables the individual needs of each student to be met and for clear action plans to be put in place to support the student on their careers journey.
As a school, we work closely with our partners at Prospect to deliver bespoke and personalised support for our students through careers adviser meetings. As a school, our careers advisor is Okwuchi Wodu, who introduces herself below:
“My name is Okwuchi Wodu and I am the Level 6 trained Careers Adviser for Oaks Park High School. My role is to provide impartial information, advice and guidance to students who attend their careers interview. The aim of each careers interview is to equip each student with the knowledge and understanding of how to make realistic choices about their future.
Students are seen either on a one to one basis or in groups. Each session allows and encourages students to do the following:
Explore their strengths, skills and future ideas.
Understand their options such as further education options, training options and higher education.
Discuss the benefits of work experience, volunteering or extracurricular activities.
Explore their careers choices and entry requirements.
The careers sessions are aimed at raising awareness about opportunities in the world of education, work and training, and the steps they need to take to get there. In addition, students are encouraged to use careers websites to do independent research, to carry out a skills assessment and participate in careers quizzes.
At the end of each session, each student leaves with an action plan to help them move forward towards their next step”.
Okwuchi is in school every Wednesday to work with our students to ensure that they have a clear idea of different career pathways. If you wish to have further information about Prospects and our careers guidance programme please contact the careers team.
