• The retail sector is the UK’s largest private sector employer with 2.9 million employees, 66% of all retail employees work for the largest 75 retail companies

• The majority of those who work in retail and hospitality are women (58% at present).

• Almost a third of retail and hospitality employees are under 25 years old.

• Half of retail employees work part-time.

• 18% of all retail and hospitality staff are managers or senior officials.

• In Redbridge, 15.4% work in retail or hospitality, which is in line with the national average.

• The Coronavirus Pandemic has caused major disruption to this industry. It is hoped that this will not have a long term effect and that the growth in the industry will continue after 2020.

• Due to the pandemic, current recruitment in this industry is down 50% from March, and is expected to fall further during 2020. Some projections show this will increase again in 2021.
