October 2022
Dear JH & HS Tiger Families:
It's hard to believe that we are winding down the final days of our 1st Quarter grading period. The time has flown by and our scholars have been incredibly busy this quarter with academics, extra curricular activities, community service projects, and much more!
We would like to congratulate our August/September Students of the Month, Caitlynn Grimm (HS) and Austynn Drake (JH). We appreciate Caitlynn and Austynn's hard work and dedication to be respectful, responsible, and engaged! Our October Student of the Month will be announced during the first week of November. Any student who receives a character card for respect, responsibility, or engagement qualifies to be a Student of the Month candidate.
On Monday, October 24th, students will not have school as teachers are participating in professional development. November 3rd will be a remote learning day; however, October 24th is no school for students.
We had a successful "Volley for a Cure" game against Southeast on October 8th to benefit Newton Falls math teacher Melissa LeMay and raise awareness for breast cancer. Thank you to Coach Baker and the Volleyball team on their hard work on this! We are looking forward to the Varsity Girls Basketball foundation game which will benefit one of our beloved bus drivers, Melissa Fowler, who is also fighting a courageous battle with cancer.
Thank you to all the parents who participated in Parent/Teacher conferences on October 12. We had multiple activities set up that evening, from Family Game Night to Financial Aid night for parents of students soon entering college. The Cross Country team did a phenomenal job putting together a "Glaze-a-Bisque" fundraiser to benefit Ms. Lemay on the night of conferences as well.
We encourage all parents to utilize the ParentAccess portal for Gradebook and reach out directly to any teachers via phone or email with concerns. We also ask that all students and parents double check that your required forms are completed on www.finalforms.com.
We are also very excited to announce that a PTO has been established in the Junior High and High School! With the help of Mrs. Julie Dunlap, ABC Club President at the ES/MS, a wonderful group of parents have volunteered their time and effort to get this off the ground. We want to give a warm welcome to PTO members Ashley Grunder (President), Brenda Hillegas (Vice President), Stephanie Irwin (Secretary), and Julie Capasso (Treasurer)!
Please join us on Tuesday, October 25th in the JH/HS Auditorium at 6:30 PM for the Indoor Marching Band concert!
Thank you for your continued support and please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns!

The JH/HS was a hub of activity for Parent/Teacher conference night! Glaze-a-Bisque fundraiser, Family Game Night, and Financial Aid Night all were taking place in addition to our conferences.
Report card grades will be posted by the end of the school day on Friday, October 21st. They will be distributed to students on 10/28. You are encouraged to check Progress Book regularly and communicate with your child's teacher.
Students in grades 7-9 that are interested in attending this year's YSU English Festival can sign up with Mrs. Schlaubach in room 112. Students in grades 10-12 can sign up with Mr. Szeljack. You will be given a handout with this year's reading material and festival contests. There is a parental consent form and $8.00 fee that needs to be returned no later than the week of Friday, October 21st, so that we can cut a check to YSU. This year's festival is held from Wednesday, April 19th through Friday, April 21st. Opening comments start at 9:00 AM and the awards ceremony is from 3:15-3:45 PM.
The after school program is underway on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Junior High. This program is available through a grant that we received in conjunction with Alta Care Group. Students who participate in the program will participate in academic intervention and social recreation with NF staff and Alta Care staff. Please email Mrs. Rankin (rankinr@Nfschools.org) or Mrs. Smith (smithj@nfschools.org) if you would like your child to participate.
If you purchased a "Home of a NF Tiger" from our recent PBIS fundraiser, you can stop by the High School office during school hours to pick yours up!
The Ohio Department of Education released the Ohio School Report Cards for the 21-22 school year last month. You can view ODE's site HERE to see our local report card.
You can also click HERE to view a presentation prepared by High School Principal Mrs. Rankin which takes a deeper look at the data points from the report card and value-added release.
The CBI Program is currently sponsoring their annual food drive. Please bring in non-perishable foods to help feed our NF families during the holidays. A prize will be awarded to the 2 nd period class that brings in the most food donations at the end of the event. A CBI student will be around during 2nd period each day to collect the donations. The drive will run through November 11.

The Newton Falls High School Sophomore Trip Committee would like to thank everyone who has assisted with the great success of the inaugural launch this year of the Newton Falls Lantern Tours. From those who purchased tickets for the events, to those who have made additional donations, the event was a great success with almost every tour selling out each night.
We also would like to thank the staff members who have helped by selling tickets and helped with the check-in process the night of the events. Mrs. Dee Howard and Mrs. Michele Peace at the high school office were very instrumental in helping keep everything organized.
Our additional tour leads, Mrs. Rachael Rankin and Mr. Scott Szeljack were awesome and very much appreciated to help take some of the performance stress off of Mrs. Donley (although she loved being in character and still went around on each tour).
We also want to thank the members of our National Honor Society who volunteered to serve as the caboose lantern holders who retrieved all the props passed around on the tour and made sure we did not lose anyone along the way.
A special thank you needs to be mentioned for two local businesses in town as well. Without the assistance, patience, and promotion of the tours from the Fieldview Acres Mercantile and Tom Colosimo, we would have not had the turn out and success that we had this year. Tom worked with us daily on selling tickets and promoting the event on social media. He also allowed us to start and end the tours in front of his business, and he stayed open well after his regular store hours each night to allow the tour guests to come into the shop and see the original bank safe that was mentioned on the tour.
We would also like to thank Broad Street Station Cafe of Newton Falls for their donation of the cookies that were distributed to the guests for a sweet treat when the tours ended.
This year’s event has helped raise $1,560.00 towards the trip fund, and we plan on making this an annual event. It also helped prove that when Tigers work together for a common positive goal, great things can be accomplished!
