November 2023

Dear JH & HS Tiger Families:

Winter feels like it's already right around the corner and the Halloween decorations are barely down! We've had a busy Fall thus far and are spending the month of November reflecting on the many things we are grateful for, especially our Tiger school community!

Report cards were distributed this week and can also be accessed on the Parent Portal in Progressbook. To learn more about accessing your child's grades from your phone or computer at any time, please click HERE. To check out our Quarter 1 honor roll video, please click HERE

Our Juniors and Seniors are busy at work planning an amazing Veterans Day program for the district which will be held on Friday, November 10th. We invite the entire community to attend the program that starts at 9 AM in our high school auditorium and witness our students' powerful appreciation of those who have fought for our country.

Chess Club just began practicing for the season under the expertise of Mr. Gross and we are so excited to see them build upon the wild success that Chess Club experienced last school year! If you are interested in having your child participate in Chess Club, please email Mr. Gross at grosse@nfschools.org for more information.

Academic Prep Bowl is currently having sign ups and we are looking forward to another competitive season where students have the opportunity to show off their skills! Prep Bowl is an academic competition where teams of students compete to answer questions on a variety of topics like Literature, History, Science, Art, Music, Mythology, Religion, Philosophy, Social Science, Geography, Current Events, and Pop Culture. Students in the High School can sign up with Mr. Szeljack (szeljacks@nfschools.org) and students in the 7th and 8th grade can sign up with Mr. Hill (hillj@nfschools.org). Practices start on Thursday, November 2nd, and take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school until 3:45 PM. The first meet is on Saturday, December 2nd.

We have spent the last couple weeks with staff members from Huntington Learning Center evaluating students in grades 6-8 for targeted tutoring to help close learning gaps in ELA and Math. Students will begin small-group tutoring sessions with Huntington Learning Center educators beginning the week of November 6th. This is a building-wide effort in the Junior High to improve student achievement and increase performance on our state test scores.

We want to say thank you to the Newton Falls Ministerial Association for donating winter coats to our clothing pantry! If your child is in need of a winter coat, please email Principal Rankin and we will make sure to get them one. We have a robust selection of clothing and shoes along with food items--if you need anything at all, don't hesitate to let us know.

We also would like to acknowledge Messiah Lutheran Church of Newton Falls for their extremely generous contribution of gift cards that we can provide to our local families in need for food and resources over the holiday season.

Lastly, we want to emphasize to all of our Tiger families that if you find yourself lacking resources and are in need of help, especially as the cold months and holidays come upon us, please do not hesitate to reach out. If your children need winter coats, warmer clothes, better shoes, or you need help with groceries and food, we are here to help. There's zero judgment--it takes a village to raise a child and we at Newton Falls Junior High and High School are part of your village. Please email rankinr@nfschools.org if you ever need additonal support and we will utilize all our resources to take care of our Tiger families!

We are committed to creating a partnership between our school and our Tiger families so that every child can be successful and achieve their highest potential. Please don't hesitate to reach out to us if you need anything or have questions/concerns. Thank you!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Rankin, Principal & Mr. Bauman, Assistant Principal
