Claude Smith participated in cross country and track and field at Red River, earning six varsity letters. Claude was the state champion in the 880, mile, 2-mile, and 2-mile relay at the 1976 State Track Meet. During that meet, the state record was set in the 2-mile relay. As an individual, he finished in the top five at the State Cross Country Meet in 1973, 1974, and 1975. He was a key member of Red River’s two State Championship cross country teams in 1973 and 1975, as well as the runner-up team in 1974. Claude attended Jamestown University from 1976-1980, where he received numerous individual and team conference and district awards in track and cross country. Claude’s accomplishments still stand the test of time. He is the current Red River school record holder in the 1600m Run, #2 in the 3200m Run, school record holder in 1600m Run, #2 in the 3200m Run, as well as a member of the school record 4x800 meter relay team, which was the first team in state history to break the eight-minute barrier.
