Tracey Heisler devoted nearly three decades to Red River athletics, leaving a lasting legacy as one of the most accomplished and respected track and field coaches in North Dakota. She served as the head girls' track coach from 19921996 and again from 2010–2021, guiding generations of student-athletes with her passion, leadership, and dedication. She was also a girls' basketball coach for the Riders from 1992-1994. During her tenure, Heisler’s teams consistently excelled at the highest levels. The Roughriders were state runner-up in 1995 and 1996, claimed the regional championship in 2011, and were a constant force at both the conference and state meets. Over 16 seasons at the state track meet, her teams finished in the top five 12 times, and at the regional meet, they placed in the top three in 15 of 16 seasons. Heisler’s coaching career produced outstanding individual results as well: she guided 30 state champions, 20 state runner-ups, and 147 total state placers. Her excellence was recognized widely, as she was named EDC Coach of the Year four times, NDHSCA Coach of the Year three times, and was a two-time NHSACA National Coach of the Year nominee. She also received the NDHSCA 20-Year Longevity Award and was honored as the Grand Forks Herald Female Coach of the Year. Beyond the track, Tracey contributed significantly to the growth of athletics across the state and nation. She served on the NFHS and NDHSAA Track and Field/Cross Country Rules Committees, the NDHSCA Executive Board, held various leadership roles with the NDHSAA, and was an active member of the Red River Coaches Council. In 2021, Tracey closed her chapter at Red River, leaving behind what she affectionately called her “littles,” but more importantly, leaving a legacy of excellence, mentorship, and commitment to the athletes and programs she served. Her career stands as a model of dedication to both sport and community.
