As 1976 graduate of Red River High School, Mark Berge made a lasting impact on the Roughrider hockey program and paved the way for future generations of Red River athletes. Mark was a standout defenseman for the Roughriders from 1974 to 1976, earning All-Conference honors in both 1975 and 1976. As a sophomore, he played a key role on the 1974 state championship team, the first in school history. He was named to the State All-Tournament Team during his junior and senior years, helping to cement Red River’s place as a state hockey power. Following high school, Mark continued his hockey career at the University of North Dakota, playing for the Fighting Sioux from 1977 to 1981. In 1977, he became the first Red River athlete ever drafted into the NHL, selected by the Philadelphia Flyers, a historic moment for both him and the Roughrider program. After his playing career, Mark remained active in the sport, coaching the University of Oklahoma ACHA hockey team, was an assistant coach for the Oklahoma City Blazers, and was also active in coaching youth hockey for many years. His passion for hockey carried into his family, as both of his sons went on to play hockey in the USHL and are currently still involved in coaching and youth hockey.
