As a 1995 graduate of Red River High School, Stephanie Wigness-Frank is one of the most decorated throwers in North Dakota track and field history. A four-year letter winner, she consistently excelled in both the shot put and discus, earning 14 combined podium finishes at the EDC and State Outdoor Meets over her four-year career. Stephanie’s dominance reached new heights in 1995 when she won the state title in the discus with a throw of 164’10”, which remains today as the seventh-best performance in state history. She was also a back-to-back indoor state champion in shot put (1994 & 1995), and captured outdoor EDC titles in both discus and shot put in 1995. Her outstanding achievements in the 95 season culminated in being named the 1995 Gatorade Athlete of the Year for Girls Track & Field. On the national stage, she was named an All-American in the discus, won the prestigious Golden West Discus Championship, was honored as the AAU Athlete of the Year, and swept the shot put and discus titles at the Junior Olympics, setting a national record in the discus. Stephanie continued her throwing career at the University of Michigan, where she made an immediate impact. She placed 3rd in the discus at the Big Ten Championships and was named the team’s "Best Thrower" during the 1996–1997 season. In 1998, she was honored as a University of Michigan Scholar Athlete and recognized as the greatest student-athlete from North Dakota in Michigan history. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology 10 and has continued to inspire future generations of athletes, including her daughter, Shelby Frank, a future Hall of Famer in her own right.
