As a 1998 graduate of Red River High School, was a standout in both track & field and cross country. He earned three varsity letters in track and two in cross country, earning All-State honors eight times in track and once in cross country. He was known for his exceptional versatility, becoming an All-State distance runner while also earning Track MVP as a sprinter in the same season. He was a three-time state champion at the 1998 State Track Meet, winning the 400 individually and anchoring the 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams to state titles. The 1998 4x400 relay team remains Red River’s school record to this day. He was also a two-time East Region Champion and still sits #2 on Red River’s All-Time performance list in the 400. After high school, Aaron competed at the University of North Dakota, where he was an NCAA All-American in the 800m, a four-year letter winner in both track & field and cross country, and served as a team captain in both sports. He set nine school records, three of which still stand today. Aaron began coaching at Wayzata High School in Minnesota in 2003, where he has led one of the most successful high school track & field programs in the country. His teams have produced 38 Minnesota state event champions, 306 All-State athletes, and 15 team state championships (including both True Team and MSHSL titles). He has been named Minnesota Section Coach of the Year five times, the USA Track & Field Coaches Association National Coach of the Year in 2015, and the National High School Coaches Association National Coach of the Year in 2016. As an assistant coach in cross country, he’s helped guide 10 state championship teams.
