As a 1984 graduate of Red River High School, Brian excelled as a multi-sport athlete in football, wrestling, and track & field. He earned three varsity letters in football, four in track, and two in wrestling, building a career defined by toughness, leadership, and championship success. On the football field, Hoffman was a dominant force, earning All-Conference and All-State honors in both 1982 and 1983. His teams consistently contended at the highest level, advancing to the state quarterfinals as a sophomore, finishing as state runner-up as a junior, and reaching the state semifinals his senior year. Hoffman was also a standout wrestler, earning All-Conference honors his senior season with an EDC individual title, and placing third at State. On the track, he was one of the team's top sprinters and played a key role on the 1983 Red River team that captured the North Dakota State Championship, contributing to one of the program’s most successful eras. Following graduation, Hoffman continued his athletic career at the University of North Dakota, where he became a four-year starter at running back for the Fighting Sioux. His collegiate career was capped by earning All-Conference Honorable Mention honors as a senior, further cementing his reputation as a versatile and impactful athlete
