As 1974 graduate of Red River High School, Mike Compton was a standout multi-sport athlete whose versatility, toughness, and competitive spirit helped define Roughrider athletics in the early 1970s. He earned varsity letters in football (3), basketball (1), and track & field (3), excelling across all seasons. On the football field, Mike was a dominant two-way player. As a senior, he earned First Team All-Conference honors on both offense and defense, a testament to his athleticism and leadership. He was also named to the AllCity Prep Football Team in 1972 & 1973. During his senior season, he also set the school record (at the time) in rushing yards in a game and season. In track and field, Mike was a co-captain his senior year and specialized in the pole vault, capturing the 1974 North Dakota State Championship. His mark of 14’2” in the pole vault has stood the test of time as Red River’s current and longest held school record. His athleticism on the basketball court also added important depth and value to Red River’s success during his time. Furthermore, Compton’s unmatched competitiveness landed him a starting role as a sixteen-year-old outfielder on the Grand Forks American Legion baseball team that captured the 1972 state championship. Following high school, Mike continued his athletic career at the University of North Dakota, where he earned an athletic football scholarship. At UND, he became a rare dual-sport collegiate athlete, lettering four times in both football and track & field. His commitment, consistency, and all-around excellence left a lasting legacy at both Red River and UND.
