An example of a platform is REACH, the national feedback and engagement unit under the Ministry of Communications and Information. It seeks to engage citizens’ views on public policies and listen to their concerns and issues. REACH consolidates and shares the feedback received with relevant government agencies. [Example]

Hence, citizens and the government working together to influence decision-making in public affairs is important as it allows for opinions from the citizens to be heard. When their voice is heard, the citizens feel appreciated and may be more motivated to work together with the government on other pressing issues in Singapore. [Explanation]

Strengthening citizens’ sense of belonging can achieve positive outcomes for the society. A sense of belonging can be developed with Singaporeans share common spaces experiences and values. [Description]

For example, preserving the memories of Dakota Crescent. Our Singapore Fund supported one project called Between Two Homes. Citizens acted as volunteers interviewed residents of Dakota Crescent and documented their stories. They have come together as an informal community group and played an active role in preserving the memories of Dakota Crescent, complemented by government support.[Example]

Through this, citizens develop an attachment to the history, people, and places in the country and with a stronger sense of belonging they will put effort into helping fellow Singaporeans. [Explanation]

Both aspects are equally important in working towards the good of society.  Citizens, as individuals or as community groups, can play complementary roles and work constructively with the government for the good of society.
