Issue Investigation
An Issue Investigation (II) allow you to explore a societal issue that is a cause for concern and of interest to your group. (Read Page 228 to 229 for an overview of II.)
There are four stages in an II.
a. Sparking Curiosity
b. Gathering Data
c. Exercising Reasoning
d. Reflective Thinking
For this prep programme an exciting immersive experience has been planned for you to make inquiry of this issue question:
Can we eradicate the NEGATIVE Experiences and Effects of Living in a Diverse Society?
This II helps you appreciate diversity and the importance of harmony.
You will develop an understanding of who you are as individuals and accept, respect, and celebrate diversity as well as common practices and values in a diverse society.
This will heighten your awareness of the need to develop personal and collective responsibility in promoting and maintaining harmony in a diverse society.
Living harmoniously in a diverse society means respecting our differences and appreciating what we share in common.
1. Sparking Curiosity
Please do this survey before coming for the frist lesson. You do not have to provide your name so you can be as candid and honesty.
Once you have done the survey we will unpack the issue in class.
How is diversity defined?
There are two kind of we will be examining
Cultural Diversity and Economic Diversity
What are possible experience and effect of living in a diverse society?
At the individual level?
At societal level?
2. gathering data
Gather information from the following websites, news articles and videos about the experience of living in a diverse society.
For each case consider the following questions.
a. What is the negative experience of living in a diverse society like Singapore?
b. Suggest one possible cause of this negative experience.
c. Identify one or two ways that has been taken to resolve this issue.
3. Exercising Reasoning
After you have extract the relevant data from the case study, share with your classmates your finding.
Did you encounter words like Stereotypes/ prejudice/ discrimination ?
Draw relevant and reasoned conclusions about living in a diverse society in Singapore. Is harmony achievable?
4. Reflective Thinking
Reflect on the societal issue using this question:
How far can we eradicate the negative experiences and effects of living in a diverse society?
Let's do a group presentation.
a.Motion
“Only the government has the power to ensure harmony in a diverse society ."
b. Divided into groups.
Half the groups will support/agree with the above motion.
The other half will challenge/disagree with the motion.
Presentation Guidelines
Each group is given 5 minutes for your presentation
You must not use more than 5 slides for your presentation.
After each presentation, the audience will be able to ask you 3 questions.
If you can answer the question, you will gain additional points. If you cannot then points will be given to the class that ask the question.
5. Final Product
Working in a group:
share a proposal on how you can help change people’s mind-set in school.
Or
Celebrate the Differences! How can you do that?
Your product can be a pod cast, a video, a poster, a newsletter or a cartoon.
