Do you agree that socio-economic status plays a more important role than nationality in contributing to a diverse society? Explain your answer.

Socio-economic status (SES) plays an important role in contributing to a diverse society. SES refers to an economic situation shared by a group of people in society. Using a combination of indicators, such as income, education, occupation, and housing type, it can provide an idea of a person’s socio-economic status. [Descriptioin]

For example, people from a higher-income group may have more resources and may pursue a more luxurious lifestyle. People from a lower-income group may have fewer resources and may pursue a simpler lifestyle. [Example]

As a result, SES may influence a person’s life experiences such as choice of housing, food, entertainment, activities, and friends or people he or she interacts with. A variety of people with different identities, each with his or her own ways of life and practices, can contribute to a diverse society. [Explanation]

Nationality plays an important role in contributing to a diverse society. People of the same nationality are generally citizens of the same country and usually live together and also share a common history and language as well as common experiences, practices, and traditions. [Description]

For example, National Day celebration is held on 9 Aug every year to mark Singapore’s independence since 1965. This national event brings together Singaporeans from all walks of life, as one united people to affirm our unity and nationhood. [Example]

Therefore, different nationalities will have distinctive identities and practices unique to their country of origin. With the presence of various nationalities in a society, it contributes to diversity. [Explanation]

Both socio-economic status and nationality are equally important as they are both diverse and complex.[Make a stand]

One’s identity may evolve over time. One’s socio-economic status is not permanent. One who started off at a lower SES may progress to a higher SES later on in life with hard work and skills upgrading.

Similarly, nationality is equally important in shaping one’s identity. People are more mobile in the current age of globalization.

As a result, people may migrate and choose to settle in another country, which is not their country of birth. Being a new citizen of another country, people will experience a new sense of togetherness as they have similar experiences living in the same area with the hosts. [Explanation of your stand]
