Sport Excellence

Extract 1 states how it is important for Singapore to promote sporting excellence.

In your opinion, what can be done to continue to promote sporting excellence in Singapore? Explain your answer using two recommendations.

We can continue to promote sporting excellence in Singapore by having more training facilities and infrastructure.  As Singapore is a land-scarce country, the athletes of some sports may find it hard to find suitable training venues and facilities. (Description)

For example, winter sports athletes are struggling to find to find new training venues as the only Olympic-sized ice skating rink in JCube will be demolished for residential development. We need to continue to establish more training venues, such as our Sports Hub, which has world-class facilities for a multitude of sports. [Example] In this way, our athletes will be able to continue to hone their skills under appropriate training conditions. In the long run, the easy availability of training facilities will provide confidence for more young athletes to choose to pursue sporting excellence. (Explanation]

Another way to promote sporting excellence in Singapore is by having more funding and scholarships for our sporting talents. Many Singaporeans choose not to pursue sports at a top level as they feel it does not pay well. [Description] To address this, the government can provide scholarships so our athletes can receive free education while focusing on their sports. They can also get monetary incentives to help pay for their training and equipment. [Example] In this way, our athletes will be able to focus on their training without worrying about money or having to take on part-time jobs to support themselves. In the long run, the financial stability will provide confidence for more young athletes to choose to pursue sporting excellence. [Explanation]
