VULTURES 2
Kanye West, Ty Dolla $ign
The most recent album by the famous rap artist Kanye West has been very disappointing to say the least. It is a collab album between West and other rap artist Ty Dolla Sign (stylized as "Ty Dolla $ign) which does not share the same level of thought and effort the rest of West's catalog holds. The development of the album was riddled with controversy, such as allegations West has been abusing nitrous oxide, a brain-killing substance.
The album dropped on August 3rd, and seemed unfinished, which turned out to be true, as the album has been "updated" numerous times to fix many mixing issues that plagued almost every track on release. The lyrics on this album are very disappointing to listen to, especially when considering Kanye was once considered a lyrical genius with tracks like "All Falls Down" and "Violent Crimes" under his belt. Almost none of the lyrics have any meaning whatsoever, which does not help in separating the album from the rest of the astoundingly better drops this year. The album has also been criticized for what seems to be the use of an artificial intelligence voice-clone of Kanye on some tracks such as "SKY CITY." All of these issues work together to create a half-baked mess of an "album." The only 2 stand-out tracks on this album would be "FRIED," which seems to be a soulless recreation of "CARNIVAL," the lead single which blew up on social media from the preceding album, VULTURES. The other one being "FIELD TRIP," featuring lyrical performances from Playboi Carti, Don Toliver, and Kodak Black.
All in all, this album is a 5/10, and when put next to its preceding album, shows a disturbing decline in West's recent work. Because of the unfinished nature on release, I believe that most of the album's issues were caused by a rush to meet a deadline, which if extended, could have provided a better overall listening experience on launch. The main issue with this album is the lack of effort put into it, as it is awfully generic and boring to listen to.
