Getting to know our teachers!!!
Mr. Timothy Brown (8 Blue Science)
By: Eva Cheverie
Do you have any pets?
I have a cat named Mona; she's gray and white, and she’s the best.
What was middle school like for you?
Middle school is the most challenging time of childhood in general. You’re still a kid but you don't have the freedom of high school. For me, it was hard to tell who I was just friendly with and who were my close friends since strong relationships weren’t really formed yet. And all of that was on top of just school itself.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I like to get together with friends to maybe eat out or go to the park, but I also like to play video games by myself. It’s kind of a balance between introvert and extrovert.
Who is your favorite actor/musical artist?
My favorite actor is Jimmy Stewart who was popular in the 40s and 50s. He was in the movie Harvey about a mentally divergent man who was a better person than any of the other characters. I also love Star Wars, I have since I was a kid. As for music I go through different phases but my favorite is Radiohead; I love their album OK Computer.
What are you afraid of?
Probably losing the things I have. Relationships mainly, but also just stuff. It took a long time to get settled and at my age you can start to feel fear about losing them.
Did you want to be a teacher when you grew up? If you hadn’t gone into teaching, what career would you have chosen?
I realized I wanted to teach in the middle of high school, but I didn’t want to teach science until I was older; I originally wanted to teach history. I actually dropped out of college because I wanted to become a musician, but that didn’t work out.
What is your funniest childhood memory?
When I was around seven or eight years old, I realized I could technically order a pizza by myself, but no one would let me, so my neighbor and I made a plan. We ordered the pizza on their phone, and paid for it with coins, but we did get it and ate it in secret, and no one else ever knew until we were much older.
Who do you admire most in the world and why? (past or present)
I probably think about who I don’t admire more than who I do. I could go cliche and say someone like Gandhi but he had issues; everyone in the past had issues. I guess anyone who treats people with respect and empathy and tries to put good in the world, but sadly those aren’t the most famous people.
If you could change one thing about the educational system what would it be?
Grading, and how it’s done. I think there should be smaller classes so you can talk more one-on-one with kids and have more qualitative grading. And to get rid of MCAS.
What is your proudest accomplishment?
Personally, I’m proud of returning to college. In general, though, I’m proud of the relationships I’ve made with my wife and friends. They’re easy to lose and I’m doing a good job maintaining them.

Math Team
By: Madeleine Penafiel
What is Math Team?
To get some inside information about math team I talked to the leader and coach of the math team Ms. Afrow.
Math team is a group of 18 really talented, and hardworking kids from both 7th and 8th grade. There are 5 different categories in math team. Some of these are: mystery, algebra, geometry, arithmetic, and number theory. The students compete against 5 teams to earn points. Our school team has gotten second place twice, and won their first meet this year. Math team has 5 meets every year, even though they are temporarily online.
What are the qualifications for math team?
To join math team you don’t have to be in honors or even have a good grade in math class. Math team meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays, originally math team only met once a week but since there were so many members they had to add an extra day. If you would like to join only attend one day not both. Each member of math team brings something new to the table. Math team is like any other team just without the sweat.
