Our Lady of the Rockies Spanish Bilingual Program uses Spanish as the only language of instruction. Students who are currently enrolled in the grade 9 Spanish Bilingual Program may register in our high school program. Students wishing to enter the Spanish Bilingual Program for the first time at the grades 10, 11, or 12 level, must first take a language proficiency assessment exam. Please contact your counsellor for more information.
Students who have completed a minimum of 25 credits in the Spanish Bilingual Program including the mandatory completion of SLA 30 will receive a Spanish Bilingual certificate and an ISA (International Spanish Academy) certificate upon graduation from grade 12. Students can also write the DELE (Diploma de Espanol como Lengua Estranjera) exam and obtain an internationally recognized credential.
Spanish Language Arts 10-1 (5 credits)
Students taking this course extend their level of Spanish proficiency by exploring the theme of identity through literature, film, culture, and personal experience. Students participate in a variety of projects for assessment purposes.
Spanish Language Arts 20-1 (5 credits)
Prerequisite: 50% (& above) in SLA10
Building on knowledge and skills acquired in Spanish Language Arts 10-1, students will explore the theme of community using literature, film, and personal experiences in their local and wider communities. Students continue developing their oral and written communication skills through real-life projects.
Spanish Language Arts 30-1 (5 credits)
Prerequisite: 50% (& above) in SLA20
Building on knowledge and skills acquired in SLA20, students will explore themes common to a variety of cultures around the world using literature, film, and personal experiences gained. Students participate in comparative projects that will build their intercultural competence.
Film and Media Arts 15 SP (5 credits)
Film and Media Arts Spanish 15 will allow students to learn both the art and technical aspects of film making and more about the culture and society of Spanish speaking countries through film.
Film and Media Arts 25 SP (5 credits)
Film and Media Arts Spanish 25 will continue to develop the techniques of filmmaking, enhance critical appreciation of films, and facilitate students’ understanding of film as a form of art and communication.
