These courses are provided to offer enrichment and an in-depth option for those who have interest in these disciplines. Students may enroll in these courses with a passing mark of 50% in either Social Studies 10-1 or Social Studies 10-2.
Personal Psychology 20 (3 credits)
This course is an introduction to the methods, theory, and practice of psychology. It includes an introductory discussion of the many fields relevant to psychology. Students will be given an opportunity to investigate behavioural, developmental, cognitive, humanistic, abnormal, and experimental psychology.
General Sociology 20 (3 credits)
The objective of sociology is to develop within the student a better understanding of group behaviour. The sociological perspective focuses on “what is” rather than “what ought to be”. Through this course students will gain a better understanding of their role in society, understand its influences on their lives, and visualize their role in societal change.
Applied Sociology 30 (3 credits)
Prerequisite: 50% Sociology 20
This course builds on the understandings gained in General Sociology 20 by examining the practical applications of sociological theories in elements of society such as Crime and Delinquency, Youth Rebellion, Sociological Phenomena, Sociology and the Individual, and Changes in Culture.
Prerequisite: Social Studies 20-1 or 20-2
This course is intended to provide a framework for all learners to enhance the understanding of the wealth and diversity of Indigenous cultures within Alberta, Canada, and the world. Aboriginal 30 reflects a perspective that encompasses and integrates the past, present, and future of Indigenous peoples.
*Note: a passing grade in this course will result in the student receiving credit in Aboriginal Studies 10, 20 and 30 for a total of 15 credits.
*Note: Aboriginal Studies 30 is recognized as an approved grade 12 course by many Albertan and Canadian universities.
This course does not replace the need for Social Studies 30 as a graduation requirement.
