Recommended Prerequisite: 65% in Grade 9 Language Arts
This is the first course in the 10-1/20-1/30-1 sequence and is a rigorous academic class. Students study various texts such as novel or factual narrative, feature film, modern play or Shakespearean play, poetry, short story, visual and multimedia, essay, and informative non-fiction. Students create a variety of texts such as personal response, critical/analytical response, narrative, informative and persuasive forms of prose, poetry, script, and oral/visual/multimedia presentations.
The emphasis throughout this course is on improving skills in reading, writing, speaking, viewing, listening, and representing. Students study a variety of texts such as novels or factual narratives, feature film, modern play or Shakespearean play, poetry, short story, visual and multimedia, essay, and informative non-fiction. Moreover, students create texts such as personal response, critical/analytical response, narrative, informative and persuasive forms of prose, poetry, script, and oral/visual/multimedia presentations.
English 10-1 AP (5 credits)
Prerequisite: 75% in Grade 9 Language Arts
This Honours course in Literature and Composition engages students in the careful reading and critical analysis of literature. Students are expected to fulfill the basic requirements of the English 10-1 course as well as explore varied enrichment lessons/activities.
English 20-1 (5 credits)
Recommended Prerequisite: 65% in English 10-1
This course is designed for students who have demonstrated they can satisfactorily accomplish the goals of text study and text creation in the English 10-1 program. Students study the following: novel, non-fiction or feature film, Shakespearean play, poetry, short story, visual and multimedia, essay, and informative non-fiction. Students create various texts such as personal response, critical/analytical response, narrative, informative and persuasive forms of prose, poetry, script, and oral/visual/multimedia presentations.
English 20-2 (5 credits)
Recommended Prerequisite: 50% in English 10-2, 40% in English 10-1
The literature studied is not as challenging as the English 20-1 course, but the text study and text creation are equally rigorous. The emphasis of this course will be to expand students’ reading habits, to employ reading strategies for comprehension, to practice speaking in public, to listen with attention, to write clearly and with purpose, and to view critically. Moreover, it will encourage student self-assessment and student collaboration.
English 30-1 (5 credits)
Recommended Prerequisite: 65% in English 20-1
In this course, students hone the skills they have developed over the last eleven years of schooling and finally show their mastery on the diploma exams. Students perfect and demonstrate their ability to think logically and perceptively, read analytically and critically, speak knowledgeably, and write confidently. Students study and create a wide variety of texts and should desire to achieve their fullest potential in exploring mature modes of thought and communication.
Recommended Prerequisite: 50% in English 20-2,
40% in English 20-1
Students study and create a variety of texts which will further prepare them for continuing education in selected university programs, technical or vocational institutions and apprenticeship programs. The emphasis is on competence in reading comprehension, listening for understanding, writing, and speaking for clear and confident communication, and understanding and evaluating media. Students will write the Alberta Education Diploma Exam.
English 30-1 AP (5 credits)
Prerequisite: 75% in English 20-1 AP
In this course, students hone the skills they developed in 10-1 and 20-1 Advanced Placement classes. Students fulfill the requirements of an English 30-1 course and can participate in enrichment lessons/activities primarily focusing on the study of American Literature. Advanced Placement style assignments and exams are also the norm. Students will be expected to write the North American Advanced Placement Exam in May and the Alberta Education Diploma Exam in June. An AP anthology is provided for students as a guide.
