Students are placed in the appropriate level by their ELL teacher.
Level II (5 credits)
This course is intended for students with previous educational experiences who have little or no experience with English prior to arriving in Alberta schools. Students require intensive support in all areas of English language development and can expect to spend at least half of their school day in level 2 programs that focus on oral language experiences integrated with reading and writing development.
Level IV (5 credits)
This course helps prepare students for future success in English classes. These students require continued support in reading, comprehension, and an emphasis on writing and skill development that will allow them to consolidate their knowledge into the structures of the English language.
Level III (5 credits)
This course is intended for students who have basic English language competency and need a program that is focused on academic language development. These students require extensive support in all aspects of reading, and an emphasis on writing and academic skill development that will support learning in all subject areas.

ELL Introduction to Canadian Studies 15 (5 credits)
ELL Introduction to Canadian Studies 25 (5 credits)
The intent of these courses is to provide the Prerequisite background knowledge of Canada, to address explicit and implicit cultural values and to offer instruction in the language, skills and approach of the Alberta Social Studies Program of Studies for students to be able to enter Social Studies 10-1, 10-2 or 10-4. They are designed to meet the needs of ESL students who have recently arrived in Canada and lack both the background knowledge of their new country and sufficient language skills to be able to participate in the Alberta Social Studies curriculum. Students’ background knowledge and understanding of curriculum will determine placement in appropriate course levels.

ESL Introduction to Mathematics 15 (5 credits)
The goal of this course is to enable students to acquire academic language skills while mastering the key foundational mathematical ideas and basic math content necessary for entry into grade-level mathematics classes. It is appropriate for those English Language Learners who enter high school without the prerequisite skills necessary for Math 10 C, 10-3 or 10-4. It is appropriate for those English Language Learners who require scaffolded learning support with the English language and content of mathematics and are Level 1 or Level 2 in their English language proficiency.

ELL Introduction to Science 15-5 (5 credits – will count towards 100 credits for graduation, but are not counted as science credits)
This course addresses the conceptual and linguistic gaps that newcomer English Language Learners have when they enter high school. The course is designed to provide the necessary Prerequisite skills to assist the eventual integration into grade-level science classes. This course is appropriate for those English Language Learners who require academic language, literacy, and science skills and are Level 1 or Level 2 in their English language proficiency.

Reading for ESL Students 15 (5 credits)
In Reading 15 students will engage with a wide range of texts in order to be successful in their senior high school courses across the curriculum and in their lives beyond school.
Religion for ELL Students 15 (3 credits)
Following the Religious 15 curriculum, students explore major cultural issues from a Christological perspective. Beginning with their own life experiences, students will acquire a deeper and more systematic knowledge of themselves, Christ’s message, and the Church.
