Workshop Description:
In this workshop, we will explore the risk and protective factors for self-harm and suicide in young people. You will develop skills in assessing risk, and learn a best practice approach for collaborative safety planning.
Learner Outcomes:
To gain a better understanding of what self-harm is and why young people may self-harm
To gain confidence in recognising the signs, and managing disclosures, of self-harm and suicidal ideation
To gain a better understanding of suicide
To discuss how schools can support young people in this area
Presenter:
Dr Liz Schilpzand is a Clinical Psychologist from Australia with expertise in trauma-related mental health. She is the founder of Sombok Psychology, a psychology clinic in Phnom Penh. She is passionate about helping people to recover from trauma, with a particular focus on working with people affected by sexual exploitation. Liz has worked clinically across a range of settings, including public mental health, justice and welfare sectors. Liz was awarded a Master of Psychology (Clinical) and Doctor of Philosophy from The University of Melbourne. Liz’s PhD research was an independent study of parental influences on children’s recovery from traumatic events. Liz is a Member of the Australian Psychological Society and Fellow of the College of Clinical Psychologists. She is a board-approved supervisor for psychologists.
Liz moved to Cambodia in 2020 where she served in a voluntary capacity in the anti-trafficking field. In 2022, she founded Sombok Psychology, a psychology practice in Phnom Penh.
