Maundene Weekly
________________________
Dear Parents/Carers,
The children in Reception have enjoyed using counters and numicon to make the number 5 this week. The children worked together throughout their maths lesson to add different amount of cubes together to make the number 5 and then wrote some of the calculations down in their books. Following on from their cooking lesson where the children made their own cookies, the children were looking at Cook Books and designed their own frontcover for their own one.
Year 1 found maths exciting this week as they were focusing on subtraction. The children used counters and cubes to support them solve a range of calculations and some children were physically crossing out amounts of objects in their books to evidence that they are taking away amounts. In their English lesson, the children were writing a set of instructions, particularly focusing on using 'bossy verbs' within each instruction.
In their maths lessons this week, the children in Year 2 have been learning about 3D shapes, in particular naming the different shapes and describing their properties. In English lessons, the children were continuing to write a letter to persuade Miss Capes to let them have a fish! The children worked extremely hard to use conjunctions in their writing.
In their English lesson this week, Year 3 were generating their own expanded noun phrases. Expanded noun phrases add more detail to the noun by adding one or more adjective. As part of their RE lesson, the children in Year 3 used Google Slides to retell the parable of the Lost Sheep. They worked collaboratively to retell the story and then discussed the meaning behind it.
Year 4 were exploring short division during their maths lesson this week and the children worked in their kagan groups to support one another when solving the calculations. Throughout their geography learning, the children were focusing on developing their knowledge of human and physical features of Germany and comparing these to the UK.
In science, Year 5 have been using their research to write a fact file focusing on either livestock farming, irrigation or deforestation and the impact these have on our climate. As part of their learning in maths, the children were adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators.
Year 6 have been working through different learning journeys in maths to address any gaps in knowledge that the children have. Some children have been working on subtracting decimals, some were working on multiplying numbers by 10, 100 and 1000 and others were working on reasoning through solving a variety of word problems.
We hope you have a lovely weekend,
Miss Capes, Mrs Jackson and the Maundene Team
