Maundene Weekly
________________________
Dear Parents/Carers,
This week, the children in Reception have been learning about subtraction. The children worked really hard to write calculations where an amount if 'taken away' and calculating what is 'left'. We are really proud of their progress and how confident they were when using whiteboards to write down a range of subtraction calculations.
The children in Year 1 have been working extremely hard to develop their phonic and reading skills. Well done Year 1! Additionally, the children were finishing and publishing their narratives which were retelling the story of Up. The children have worked incredibly hard to ensure they have used descriptive language within their writing.
Year 2 have developed their gymnastics skills in PE where they were learning how to use small apparatus safely within a routine. In their English lessons, the children finished writing and publishing their instructions about how to have a successful trip to the cinema.
Year 3 enjoyed writing their narratives this week. The children focused on using inverted commas to punctuate speech and a range of expanded noun phrases to add detail to their writing. In maths, the children displayed resilience whilst working through multiplication calculations. They used the column method effectively and understood that the inverse of multiplication was division.
The children in Year 4 have been loving PE this term! The children have been practicing their backhand in tennis and have discovered the key for tennis is control.
Year 5 have been solidifying their understanding of multiplication and division by attempting problem solving and reasoning questions. The children have deconstructed questions carefully and then decided on the correct operation and steps in order to solve it! In addition, the children loved their French lesson where they read through their weather reports in French.
As part of their Year 6 art learning, the children worked hard to use their sketching skills and explored using oil pastels. The children also encouraged one another to have a growth mindset whilst editing their speeches in English. The children worked in pairs to support each other and improve their writing further.
We hope you have a fantastic weekend,
Miss Capes, Mrs Jackson and the Maundene Team
We understand that sometimes parents would like to speak to the class teacher about their child but can we please ask that you try not to do this first thing in the morning as staff are busy settling and welcoming the children in to class - this also means if it does happen it may appear rushed and not personal.
Please try to do the followiing unless an emergency:
Catch the teacher at the end of the day
Speak to the office staff, Carla and Emma, who will pass a message on to the class teacher to call you
Email in to the school office which will then be passed on to the class teacher
Thank you for your support and understanding with this.
Following on from Pupil feedback recently, Mrs Jackson and a few of the children in Year 6 have planned a Maundene Talent Show for Year R to Year 6 children.
On Wednesday 8th January 2025, Olivia and Arisha in Year 6 spoke to the school about our Maundene Talent Show. They have told the children the following:
On Friday 10th January 2025, a sign up sheet will be put up in all classrooms where up to 10 children can put their names up to show off their talent to their class. We encourage the children to be very specific about each talent and remember, these may have to be performed in front of the school, therefore they need to be something that the children have rehearsed a lot.
On the afternoon of Friday 31st January 2025, auditions will take place in classrooms and a vote will take place. One person from each class who gets the most votes will go through to a final on Tuesday 4th February at 2pm.
On the afternoon of Tuesday 4th February at 2pm, the final will take place where Mrs Jackson, Arisha and Olivia will decide on a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.
Finally, on Friday 14th February at 2pm, which is the last day of term, Year R to Year 6 are invited into the hall to watch all finalists perform.
We are really excited for all children to show off their talents and we can not wait to celebrate with them.

Developing strong oracy skills is crucial for children's success in school and beyond. It empowers them to express themselves confidently, think critically, and engage effectively with others. To support this vital skill, our weekly newsletter will feature fun and engaging oracy activities that families can enjoy together at home, fostering communication and building confidence in your children.
