Maundene Weekly
________________________
Dear Parents/Carers,
Year R started their week by reading and retelling the story of the Gruffalo. As the adults read the story, the children were joining in with some of the words. The children then used drawings to represent the key characters and events in the beginning, middle and end of the story. In addition to this, the children made their own Gruffalo masks using paint and paper.
Throughout their English learning, Year 1 focused on using time adverbials when sequencing events in their core text, Up. In maths, the children applied resilience to their learning about numbers up to 20. They used tens frames and other mathematical equipment to make numbers to 20.
In their English lessons, the children in Year 2 wrote a set of instructions about how to have a successful Cinema Trip. They then proceeded onto actually going to the cinema! Year 2 thoroughly enjoyed their trip to Cineworld where they watched Paddington. The children were so excited and they loved the film and snacks!
Year 3 applied resilience to their maths learning this week as they were multiplying 2 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers. The children used their knowledge of place value first to create the numbers that they were multiplying and then they multiplied the numbers together. During their English lesson, the children focused on using inverted commas within their writing and using other words for the word said.
As part of their maths learning, the children in Year 4 were multiplying numbers by 10 and 100. The children focused on using place value charts to identify which columns the digits go in and then moved the numbers to the left and added a place holder to show that the number gets larger.
Year 5 were developing their knowledge about figurative language which include similes, metaphors, personification, hyperboles and idioms. The children used dictionaries and a thesaurus to define vocabulary and uplevel their vocabulary. In their maths lesson, the children continued to embed their understanding of multiplication by multiplying a two-digit number by a two-digit number.
In maths, Year 6 have been learning about scale factors. The children were working independently to solve problems involving similar shapes where the scale factor is known or can be found. In addition to this, the children were working hard during their reading lessons to answer a range of retrieval and inference questions.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Miss Capes, Mrs Jackson and the Maundene Team
We understand that sometimes parents would like to speak to the class teacher about their child but can we please ask that you try not to do this first thing in the morning as staff are busy settling and welcoming the children in to class - this also means if it does happen it may appear rushed and not personal.
Please try to do the followiing unless an emergency:
Catch the teacher at the end of the day
Speak to the office staff, Carla and Emma, who will pass a message on to the class teacher to call you
Email in to the school office which will then be passed on to the class teacher
Thank you for your support and understanding with this.
Following on from Pupil feedback recently, Mrs Jackson and a few of the children in Year 6 have planned a Maundene Talent Show for Year R to Year 6 children.
On Wednesday 8th January 2025, Olivia and Arisha in Year 6 spoke to the school about our Maundene Talent Show. They have told the children the following:
On Friday 10th January 2025, a sign up sheet will be put up in all classrooms where up to 10 children can put their names up to show off their talent to their class. We encourage the children to be very specific about each talent and remember, these may have to be performed in front of the school, therefore they need to be something that the children have rehearsed a lot.
On the afternoon of Friday 31st January 2025, auditions will take place in classrooms and a vote will take place. One person from each class who gets the most votes will go through to a final on Tuesday 4th February at 2pm.
On the afternoon of Tuesday 4th February at 2pm, the final will take place where Mrs Jackson, Arisha and Olivia will decide on a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.
Finally, on Friday 14th February at 2pm, which is the last day of term, Year R to Year 6 are invited into the hall to watch all finalists perform.
We are really excited for all children to show off their talents and we can not wait to celebrate with them.
