Decolonising our mind professional learning for school leaders

Brief description By the end of this session attendees will:


  • Have considered their anti-racism journey in context with their school’s curriculum;

  • Addressed historical misconceptions to increase representation and promote a more balanced view of all cultures and their history across the school curriculum;

  • Explored the impact teaching practice by enabling children of all cultural backgrounds to feel connected to local and global history so that they are able to identify themselves as part of British society/culture.

  • Considered impact on learners’ self-esteem and self-worth empowering them to interact fully with their school education and achieve to the best of their ability;

  • Have experienced open discussions within a safe environment, attendees acquire knowledge and attitudes in relation to race and to continue the conversations within school.

The Transatlantic Slave Trade – A balanced narrative

By the end of this session attendees will:

  • Have been enabled to teach a factual account of the transatlantic slave trade with care and sensitivity to all learners in the classroom;

  • Understand the beginning of the enslavement of Africans by the Portuguese and Spanish through to the European’s involvement during the 17th century when the slave trade was at its peak;

  • Explored an alternative narrative that focusses on the many rebellions and acts of resistance across the slave plantations by the enslaved Africans, including: The stories of African, African American and female abolitionists in the UK, The Haitian Revolution, William Wilberforce and his role in the slave owners £20M compensation fund, the ‘Apprenticeship Programme’ and his involvement in the continuation of enslavement in Sierra Leone and the legacy of the slave trade including the loss of populations.
