This term, our writing will be inspired by The Darkest Dark by Chris Hadfield.
This term, our writing text will be based on the book 'The Queen of the Falls' by Chris Van Allsburg. The story is based on a retired 62 year old lady, Annie Edson, who sought fame and fortune after the closure of her beloved Charm School. Deciding to something extraordinary, Annie would go over Niagara Falls in a wooden barrel.
We will be focusing on setting descriptions, diary entries and recounts from different character's perspectives whilst incorporating skills to make our writing cohesive and descriptive.

We have learnt the skills to create a recount from the perspective of Annie about her dare devil feat, conquering the falls. To begin with, we explored a generic recount in order identify the features of this type of genre, giving us a fantastic foundation to create our own based on the amazing stunt that Annie conquered.
We have also explored the setting of the Niagara Falls in order to write our own setting description, focusing on fronted adverbials and descriptive language. Brainstorming ideas for each of the senses gave us the necessary ideas to incorporate into out description of the journey of the Niagara Falls.
This week we have been exploring Annie's character by identifying suitable vocabulary to help the readers of our writing undertand the type of person she is. Using this information, we were able to create a description about Annie's life at the beginning of the story. We focused on the use of fronted adverbials to give our sentence structures a variety of openers and the use of parenthesis to add extra detail.
Throughout module 3, we have been using the text The Night Diary by Veera Hiranandani to inform and inspire our writing. Our first piece of writing was a diary entry, followed by a character description to describe two of the main characters of the book. We then moved onto letter writing and a setting description to describe an Indian marketplace. To end our writing unit for this module, we created a balanced argument to discuss the arguments for and against Nisha and her family leaving their family home in India to move to a new home in Pakistan due to the India and Pakistan divide.
