Module 1
Pupils will be taught to:
increase their familiarity with a wide range of books, including fairy stories, myths and legends, and retelling some of these orally
draw inferences such as inferring characters’ feelings, thoughts and motives from their actions, and justifying inferences with evidence
participate in discussion about both books that are read to them and those they can read for themselves, taking turns and listening to what others say.
Comic strips
We looked at comic strips as a way to begin our work on myths
We read a few different myths and then looked at the features.
We began to try to piece together a myth by looking at the features of a comic strip and our knowledge of stories.
We have considered the character of Theseus and his actions.
We considered his actions and discussed whether they will have a positive or negative impact.
Module 2
Pupils will be taught to:
increase their familiarity with a wide range of books, including fairy stories, myths and legends, and retelling some of these orally
draw inferences such as inferring characters’ feelings, thoughts and motives from their actions, and justifying inferences with evidence
participate in discussion about both books that are read to them and those they can read for themselves, taking turns and listening to what others say.
We have looked at the skill of predicting and how these should be based on what we can see in pictures, from what people have said, the setting and events that have already taken place.
Our predictions allowed us to make links with our work on Greek Gods and Goddessses from module 1.
We created wanted posters for Zeus based on his actions in the text so far.
In pairs, we discussed what we would do to Hercules if we were Demon (the main character) and what we would do in real life if we saw somebody intentionally being unkind to living things. We made connections to our work in PSHE.
Module 3
Predictions:
"I predict that Iliona and Apollo will get sold, escape and then return to where they came from." Ollie
"What could happen next is they go to a city wanted for salves and Iliona gets sold to a rich family but Apollo and Iliona will get separated." - Leighton
"What I think will happen next is that someone else is going to capture her then she will be their slave as well." - Poppy
" I think they get sold bu they escape and hide to Egypt on the ship but then something happens." - Maisie
"I predict that Appollo and Iliona are going to find a family but the family aren't nice to them." - Finley
"I think that the children might get sold to a man and do all the work for him." - Maya
"I think what is going to happen next is that Iliona and her brother Apollo will be sold as slaves that will work for the rich and powerful." - Selin
Making predictions about what may happen next using what we know so far.
Summarising events that have taken place.
We thought about the setting of the story using our retrieval skills.
Based on the description provided in the story we drew what we though an amphitheatre would look like.
We explored the vocabulary used by the author
We have been using thesaurus' to try and improve our vocabulary in our written work.
Module 4
To help conclude our work on Volcanoes and the Romans we reread a story which we read in Yr 3.
Inferring - Livia and Tranio behaved the way they did and ran away because they didn't want to get hurt from the dark, grey ash which was coming from the volcano. This wasn't the right thing to do as they could have drowned being in the bought if they didn't know how to swim or sail the boat. - Erin
Summarising - Tranio was always just wondering and he went to pay with his friend Livia. Then one day the ground started to rumble and ash clouds started to appear. The children ran to the boat for safety and hid under the rugs. The managed to escape. - Selin
We made connections with this book and The Life Electirc
Common themes:
relationship between father and son
dreams
inventions
Module 5
We looked at first and second predictions to see if what we thought was accurate.
Children were able to infer, explain, retrieve and use ambitious vocabulary throughout a variety of engaging texts.
Module 6
