Module 5
Parts of the plants
In our first Science lesson this module, we looked at the different parts of plants. We had to go around the school site and collect different plants and compare them. After collecting and comparing them, we had to draw and label the key features.
NC: identify and describe the functions of different parts of flowering plants: roots, stem/trunk, leaves and flowers
What plants need to grow
In our next lesson, we conducted an experiement to see what plants need to grow. We all decided what we were not going to give our bulbs and seeds (light, air, water, warm or nutrients) and then observed it and measure how tall they were over time. After obsevring the seeds over time, we found out what the plants needed to grow.
NC: explore the requirements of plants for life and growth (air, light, water, nutrients from soil, and room to grow) and how they vary from plant to plant
Life cycle of a plant
In this lesson we learnt about the life cycle of plants. We drew the cycle and made predictions of what would happen if the cycle broke.
NC: explore the part that flowers play in the life cycle of flowering plants, including pollination, seed formation and seed dispersal.
Plants around the world
In this lesson, we researched different plants from around the world and explored what biome they are in. We then looked at what plants are used for in different countries.
Water transferring
In this lesson, we looked at how water is transferred from the roots and up around the plant. We predicted what might happen and then observed three different plants and left them for different times to see what would happen.
NC: investigate the way in which water is transported within plants
Module 6
How muscles move
In this lesson, we looked at how the muscles in our body help us move. We role played different actions with our partner and they had to guess whether the muscles were pulling or pushing. After this we watched some videos of people using their muscles and we had to try and name the right muscle and whether it is either pulling or pushing to make the action.
NC: identify that humans and some other animals have skeletons and muscles for support, protection and movement.
Magnets
In this lesson, we explored magnets. We had to fin the different poles and explain what they do (attract or repel). We then explored around the class to find nine different items and see if they were magnetic. After predicting if they were magnetic we had to test them. After teseting, we wrote a conclsuion of what we had found.
NC:
notice that some forces need contact between two objects, but magnetic forces can act at a distance
observe how magnets attract or repel each other and attract some materials and not others
describe magnets as having two poles
predict whether two magnets will attract or repel each other, depending on which poles are facing.
