Pupils should be taught to develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design.
Pupils should be taught:
to create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas
to improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials [for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay]
about great artists, architects and designers in history.

This module, we have been looking at photomontages. We have explored artwork by Hannah Hoch, explored composition of images and created a citiscape photomontage. We also used our computing skills to create a digital photomontage linked to our central idea and learning in science.
This module, we have been exploring printing in art. First we conducted an artist study for Katsushika Hokusai, a Japanese artist who specialied in printmaking. From this study, we took inspiration from his woodblock print series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji to create our own mountainous landscape using printing.
This module we have been exploring how religion can be expressed through artwork. In order to explore this, we looked at how different religions such as Christianity, Muslim, Hinduism and Buddhism represent their religion through art, focussing particularly on colour, symbols and materials.

This module, we learned what hues, tints, tones and shades are and how they are different - they explored these by mixing their own to. We then used the skills learnt to create different tones, tints and shades to create mountain ranges. Once we had practised these skills we found out about Welsh artist Kyffin Williams and explored a variety of his artwork. This helped us to then look at the different ideas, feelings and moods portrayed in his work. To draw our painting topic to an end, we used everything that we had learnt over this module to create a mountainous landscape using hues, tints, tones and shades.

Lesson 1: children discovered Impressionism art and famous artists during this period, Claude Monet in particular. Children selected a piece of artwork and identified the different features that make it an impressionist and explained why they liked this particular piece.
Lesson 2 and 3: manipulating and editing images to create a piece of artwork
Children selected an impressionist piece of artwork for the backdrop of their piece of digital art. We found out how to remove the background from images, alter the colour, rotate the image and the importance of layering and ordering images.
Children created fun and silly pieces of art and used their excellent computing skills to be successful.
