Course overview - Study Period 3 and 4
Newspapers
Social and participatory media
NEA
During the first half term, learners will study Newspapers, focusing in detail on the two newspaper close study products: the 2021 front pages and featured stories of The Times and The Daily Mirror. Newspapers are in-depth close study products and are studied with reference to all four elements of the theoretical framework: Language, Representation, Industry and Audience. Learners will compare the two papers, considering their ownership, target audiences and political affiliations, as well as their front pages and featured stories, considering the ways in which language is used to create meaning and the ways in which key social groups are represented.
In the second half term, learners will complete their non-exam assessments before moving on to Online, Social and Participatory Media. Learners have already studied Marcus Rashford and Lara Croft; their final close study product is Kim Kardashian, and they will study both Kardashian herself, considering her use of Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to promote her
campaigns and her own celebrity brand, and the game ‘Kim Kardashian: Hollywood’. The emergence of Kim Kardashian as a cultural phenomenon will be compared with the impact and influence of both Lara Croft and Marcus Rashford, particularly in relation to representation of gender, class and identity.
