Course overview - Study Period 1 and 2
During the first half term, Study Period 1, learners will study television, with a focus on the two close study products: ‘Doctor Who’ and ‘His Dark Materials’. They will study the history of the BBC, the development of the genre of science fiction and fantasy, and the contextual background of both television programmes, alongside critical theory relating to audience and language. Learners will compare representations of gender, race, age, and place in both television programmes in order to consider the extent to which these representations have changed and developed through time.
During the second half term, Study Period 2, learners will focus on online, social and participatory media. The close study products include the video games ‘Kim Kardashian: Hollywood’ and ‘Lara Croft Go’, as well as Kim Kardashian’s online social media presence. Learners will study and analyse representations of femininity and masculinity, place, class and age, as well as considering the types of stereotypes that are featured in these products and how they appeal to their target audiences. Contextually, they will look at the emergence of Kim Kardashian as a cultural phenomenon and compare this with the impact and influence of both Lara Croft and Marcus Rashford, considering the ways in which all three reflect the nature of online participatory audiences and the link between celebrities and their followers.
