8 Visual Elements: Line introduces students to line as a powerful tool for directing the viewer’s eye and organizing a photograph. In this assignment, students seek out and photograph both obvious and subtle lines—straight, curved, diagonal, and implied—found in natural and built environments.

The images in this gallery demonstrate how line can create movement, rhythm, structure, and visual flow within a composition. By paying attention to how lines lead, divide, frame, or connect elements within the frame, students begin to make more deliberate compositional choices.
