Charcoal Objects

Charcoal Objects invites students to apply foundational observational drawing skills to a subject of their own choosing. Using a combination of vine charcoal, compressed charcoal, and charcoal pencils, students carefully observed a personal object and translated it into a fully rendered drawing that emphasizes form, value, texture, and light.

This project challenges students to make thoughtful material choices, using vine charcoal for loose block-ins and atmospheric shadows, compressed charcoal for deep, rich darks, and charcoal pencils for refined edges and detail. By working through multiple stages of observation and refinement, students develop stronger control over contrast, surface quality, and spatial depth. The resulting drawings reflect both technical growth and individual voice, demonstrating how everyday objects can become expressive, dramatic, and visually compelling through careful study and intentional use of charcoal.
