Cover Story

In this project, students step into the role of magazine designers and editorial storytellers. The goal is to create a professional-quality magazine concept that includes an original cover design and a two-page interior spread for the featured cover story.

Students begin by developing a theme for their magazine. This could focus on topics such as sports, music, fashion, culture, technology, travel, or any subject that fits a clear editorial identity. Once the concept is established, students design a compelling magazine cover that captures the reader’s attention while clearly communicating the tone and subject of the publication.

The cover must include essential elements of magazine design such as a masthead, cover lines, featured headlines, imagery, and strong visual hierarchy. Students carefully consider typography, color, composition, and branding to make their magazine feel authentic and visually engaging.

After the cover is complete, students design the interior two-page cover story spread. This spread expands on the main headline from the cover and presents the story using professional editorial layout techniques. Students combine text, images, headlines, subheads, pull quotes, and columns to create a layout that feels like a real magazine article.

Throughout the project, students focus on advanced design principles including hierarchy, alignment, grid systems, balance, and typography. The challenge is to make the layout both visually dynamic and easy to read while maintaining a consistent visual style between the cover and the interior spread.

The final result is a complete magazine concept that demonstrates how graphic designers combine photography, typography, and layout to tell a compelling visual story.
