Value Illustration

Value Exploration is an abstract drawing project that challenges students to turn a simple set of overlapping shapes into a convincing illusion of depth using only light and shadow. After building a 7-step value scale, students apply that skill by choosing a single light source and carefully shading geometric and organic forms to create highlights, midtones, core shadows, and cast shadows. The result is a collection of bold, sculptural compositions that show strong contrast, smooth transitions, and thoughtful use of negative space—proof that value alone can make flat shapes feel three-dimensional.
