Contour Line Drawings

Contour Line Drawings challenges students to let go of perfection and focus instead on observation, movement, and process. Over the course of two class periods, students completed a series of contour line portraits using rotating sets of restrictions such as drawing blind, using their non-dominant hand, or combining both limitations at once.

These constraints intentionally disrupt students’ usual habits and force close looking, slow decision-making, and trust in hand–eye coordination. Without the ability to erase, shade, or correct, each line becomes a record of time, attention, and physical movement. The resulting drawings are expressive, layered, and often unpredictable, revealing personality and emotion through line alone. Together, the works celebrate risk-taking and experimentation, emphasizing that strong drawing is not always about accuracy, but about seeing differently and embracing the marks that happen along the way.
