Foundational Forms (Graphite) is a core observational drawing assignment that introduces students to the essential building blocks of three-dimensional form. Working from a still life of simple geometric solids—such as spheres, cubes, cylinders, and cones; students focus on accurate proportion, light source, value transitions, and cast shadows. Using graphite, the project emphasizes smooth shading, strong contrast, and the illusion of volume and weight. These drawings lay the groundwork for all future observational work, teaching students how light defines form and how careful value control can transform simple shapes into convincing three-dimensional objects.
