Here are a few highlights from our week together!
Even as we continued our Spring/Bug theme, the classroom was buzzing with rich, hands‑on learning. We added refreshing water play to our centres, and the children were especially excited to explore our new bees, nature potion making and camping focus—diving into activities that sparked curiosity, imagination, and joyful early learning. Their enthusiasm carried us through the week, making each moment feel full and lively.
Our story There Was an Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly 1invited the children into a hands‑on, playful retelling of the classic cumulative tale. Instead of focusing on the words, the children explored the story through action—selecting animals and placing them into the old woman’s felt‑mat “belly” one by one. They were fully engaged as they matched each creature to the growing sequence, building early literacy and sequencing skills through movement, curiosity, and imaginative play. It was a joyful, tactile way for them to experience the story while making sense of its silly, ever‑growing list of animals.
Our Campfire Pokey brought a burst of movement and imagination to our week. The children gathered around our pretend “campfire,” eagerly joining in the playful actions—putting their marshmallows in, taking their marshmallows out, and shaking their sillies all about. Afterward, they had a chance to share their favourite campfire foods, proudly calling out classics like hot dogs, popcorn, and even potatoes. It was a lively, joyful experience that blended movement, imagination, and community in a way that felt warm and wonderfully camp‑themed.
Our hands‑on learning this week was full of creativity and fine‑motor fun. The children gave their grass a playful “haircut” and added eyes and a mouth to turn their containers into cheerful little faces. They also cut, coloured, and glued animals from our story, practicing careful cutting and assembly. To top it off, some children helped make cozy soaps—choosing the colour and shape they wanted before we poured the warm mixture together. It was a wonderfully tactile mix of creativity, sensory exploration, and early skill‑building.
A new week brought fresh excitement to our Backyard BBQ dramatic‑play area. The children eagerly stepped into the space—"flipping" burgers, serving up sizzling favorites, and inventing lively stories as they cooked for friends. They also began mixing up simple “BBQ sauces” and picnic‑style sides with the props, adding a playful new layer to their imaginative cooking adventures.
