Nelson Mandela
A Light In The Darkness
Nelson Mandela is not just a legend but a persevering role model who stood up for black South Africans.
Nelson was born on the 18th of July 1918. At the age of 26 he joined the African National Congress Party. Shortly after, he married Evelyn Maze. However in 1960 the A.N.C was banned by a white South African government. People like Mandela got angry and protested meanwhile the A.N.C was illegally reformed.
In 1962 he, along with many other A.N.C members, was jailed. Two long years later he was sentenced for treason. This only enraged more people and over the next 26 years the black South Africans would gain power and be liberated.
In 1990 he was released into a black controlled country. Only three years later he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. In 1994 his autobiography was published, A Long Walk To Freedom and soon he was elected first black president. Five years later he stepped down and became an ambassador.
He is now 94, living a peaceful life and has touched the hearts of many and is most definitely a light in the darkness.
