With our understanding of 'Counting', 'Learn Its' and 'It's Nothing New' we can use structured ways of calculating.
The calculation methods we teach are designed to support the children in moving from written to mental calculations with minimum jottings. This is why the methods we teach may look very different to the ones taught years ago.
