The JL School year has been going on for a few months, filling students' brains with knowledge, and same as last month's paper this section of the JL Verdict will cover the general student body opinion. We have interviewed students around the school to ask them about their opinions and this is what we got. To be interviewed for the October issue, please email ted831802@gnespes.ca.
The Halloween Spirit Week and Dance were exciting events that happened in October that were put together by our wonderful event team at student council. The majority of students loved the spirit week, “The spirit week was very good, I like the things that they did”. A lot of students participated in the different themed days and had an overall good time. Most of the people that were interviewed did not attend the dance, one person cited it was because of cost, but the feedback was generally positive for that one as well.
October’s paper has gotten good feedback from emails and from interviews it has seemed to have gotten around about its existence.
We also wanted to dicuss mandatory credits with students. Mandatory credits are courses that are required by the province to graduate high school. Mandatory credits are something that is widely regarded as important to many students and they believe, although there may need to be some room for improvement or leniency, they are vital to creating a functioning future. “I think they are pretty valid. I do think they can be quite bendable...if that makes sense to you- it is nice that you can pick and choose what you use for those credits like extra-curriculars, the math, the science, the histories and all those. However, I do find when someone is struggling in a certain aspect, maybe they can have different mandatory credits to fit to their learning availabilities or the career path they want. For example, if they choose to do more of an Arts Credit and that's what they want to pursue in life, maybe they could have like an exception or you do like a sheet or your parents sign, something like that just because people are doing different things.”
We asked students what they thought was the best class and why and they were happy to answer.
“Instead of best class can I say best teacher? Okay the best teacher I've found so far is Miss English”
“English class I love my English teacher.”
“Probably English or Mathematics because it's pretty important to know how to read.”
“ I like art class I like Duncan's art class”
“Construction Trades”
Many students participate in a variety of extracurricular activities and much more participate in sports such as rugby or softball, which take place in the spring season. Two clubs that were mentioned were the equity team, “We sit there and we're like, how can we try and make the school feel nicer, and how can we make it safer, and how can we help with representing other cultures and communities in the school and all that.” and the Youth Health Center, “I'm also with the Youth Health Center and we focus on helping people not only in school but out of school so we do couple charity drives and food runs, toys runs, all that which is always fun and we have party at the holidays”
Thank you for reading November’s issue of the JL Student Opinion. If you want your opinion here, email for an interview at ted831802@gnspes.ca and try to schedule a date. This has been an amazing first quarter of the school year and we hope to continue by giving the staff and students feedback on how to make the school flourish and thrive for all students. Hope to hear your opinions soon, have a lovely day.
