Maria lives in Minnesota. (What do you think the weather is like in MN?) Winters in Minnesota are very cold with below-freezing temperatures. One year, 432 cm (170 inches) of snow fell in the northern part of the state. In the summer, Maria keeps a greenhouse to grow vegetables for her community; however, the size of her community is growing and Maria needs to start growing vegetables year-round, even in the winter. To do this, Maria needs to build a deep-winter greenhouse where plants will grow even during the cold winter months. The plants Maria needs to grow will only survive if the temperatures within the greenhouse reach 30 degrees Celsius (or above) within the first 10 minutes of sun. The plants must also have access to plenty of sunlight. Like many farmers, Maria doesn't have a lot of money. She can only use everyday materials she has on her property to build her greenhouse, and the cost must be less than $0.50.
