Lab Notebook
Text from yesterday
Write down at least 3 questions you could ask in our Socratic seminar about the text we read yesterday.
Examples:
What does it mean when it says ...
What would be an example of __________?
How are ________ and _________ different?
PERMISSION SLIPS FOR NEXT WEDNESDAY! WELLNESS SQUAD!
I can boldly share my ideas and actively listen to the ideas of others in my first Socratic seminar of 8th grade science!
This means I will participate in a socratic seminar.
This means I will refine my graphic organizer for the first case study.
How does the Socratic dialogue work?
There are two roles:
Inner Circle: ask and answer questions, stay focused on conversation
Outer Circle: listen to dialogue, keep track of participation of partner, write down any questions or thoughts you come up with
What do you think the goal of the Socratic dialogue is? What should you have gotten out of it by the end?
There are different types of questions:
Help Understanding
Evidence to Support View
Higher Level Questions
Changing the Subject
Building on Others' Ideas
Agreeing and Disagreeing
Making Assumptions
Inviting Others to Join the Dialogue
Expressing Your Opinion
A breakdown of these questions can be found on the
Socratic Dialogue Sentence Starters
.
How does grading work?
In order to earn a 3 for today:
You will participate at least twice in the inner circle
You will complete the
Socratic Dialogue Peer Evaluation
in the outer circle
If you participate only once, you will earn a 2
If you do not participate, you will earn a 1
In order to earn a 4, I am looking for quality of participation as defined by the rubric on the peer evaluation.
What are we talking about?
You can use the graphic organizer to help guide your conversation
1
2
3
Frayer Model
If necessary, I will help push the conversation. Bonus points for Inner Circle members who help move the conversation toward topics that haven't been fully explored on the organizer or from the text.
Visuals
Forces are Everywhere
Forces and Motion
Energy Transfer
Homework
Finish reading and annotating your text by Monday so we can start our experiment!
Debrief
