Focus: Multiplying Decimals

Learning Target: I can use a model to multiply decimal values by whole numbers.

Task: Complete all of the slides from the slideshow. You will need to do three tasks for each problem: 

1) Drag the Base-10 pieces onto the flat.

2) Type the product in the equation. Double click on the box with the pink question mark in order to type.

3) Show the steps to solve with the standard algorithm WITH whole numbers.

EARLY FINISHER:

   • Write each problem on notebook paper or whiteboard.

   • EXAMPLE: 0.92 x 4

     1. • Multiply using the standard algorithm (remember to ignore the decimal point)...92 x 4 which equals 368

   • Use a Benchmark Product to know where to place the decimal point in the actual product.

     1. • .92 is close to 1 so 1 x 4 = 4...

        • Closest number to 4 with the digits 368 would be 3.68, so that is the actual product to .92 x 4

Focus: Decimal Multiplication

Learning Target: I can use a model to multiply decimal values by decimal values.

Task: Use your understanding of decimals and of modeling fractions multiplication to determine how to multiply decimal values by decimal values.
