Unit Objective
Students will be able to use a minimum of 3 simple machines to create a cardboard arcade.
They will need to explain the simple machines used
They will use recycled materials to create their arcade
The big challenge is to incorporate the Makey makey into the arcade design to make it electronically interactive. (i.e. keeping score, digital sounds, etc watch this video)
Vocabulary for this Unit
Simple machine= basic devices that use mechanical advantage to make work easier
work = the energy transferred to or from an object by using force
lever = simple machine consisting of a beam pivoting on a fixed hinge (fulcrum)
pulley= simple machine that has a grooved wheel that uses a cord to change the direction of force applied
inclined plane= a surface that is angled so one end is higher than the other
wedge = object that has one thick end and one thin edge used to separate two items
screw = an object that converts rotational force into linear force (an inclined plane around a cylinder)
wheel and axle= a round object fixed to a rotating piece that turns freely
recycle= converting waste into reusable material
reuse= the act of using an item over and over, sometimes for a purpose different than originally intended
