NOTE: You need to list TinkerCAD in your Schoology courses as one of the digital tools your students will use (see directions here) so that parents know that their child is using it. Most importantly, you are to add your students as detailed on the approved digital tools list, using their first name and last initial (which creates the nickname). Students are to join Tinkercad with the class code and the nickname. That process eliminates the collection of any student data that can be tied to an actual student.
Vocabulary for this unit
Filament = thermoplastic material that comes in a spool and is melted to create a printed item
base layer =first build levels that ensure a firm foundation on the build plate
build plate =part of the 3D printer that warms up for filament to adhere
CAD = computer aided design such as Tinkercad of OnShape
extruder = part of the printer that heats up filament and pushes it through the nozzle onto the build plate
raft =a base layer that ensures adhesion to the build plate
slicing = the process of taking a 3D CAD model and turning it into layered directions for a 3D printer
overhang = printed part that extends outward at an angle from the previous layer
supports = sacrificed material upon which an overhang can be printed and attaches to the build plate
nozzle = part of the printer that is heated and places the filament on the build plate
prototype = first model of a design that future versions are developed
iteration = the process of doing something more than once to improve it
