Onboarding Idea Slides
These onboarding Stock Market Challenge slides are designed take your students on a journey on the stock market challenge, keep in mind students will not start trading until day 3 (Friday 3). Of course teachers YOU can adjust accordingly.
Also, we recommend teams and this presentation will be set up so students start with $100,000 and investing $10,000/week into a different sector each Friday. **(If you use the premium version of the Personal Finance Lab to set up your stock market challenge you can start with $10,000 and then provide a $10,000 deposit weekly.) You of course can run it how you like, but this would enable students to practice dollar cost averaging and researching a different sector of the economy each week.
TEACHER RESOURCE slides on how to set up your class and info that you will need about the HTMW. This was the free version for Fall of 2024. For the Spring of 2025 make sure you register your classes in the Personal Finance Lab.

General summary of unit:
Designed to give students an exposure to investments to prepare them for the "How The Market Works (HTMW)". Many of the resources were taken from Next Gen Personal Finance and Adapted for our classrooms.
Middle school students will explore the basics of investing in the stock market, including understanding stocks and bonds, managing risk, and modern investing strategies, culminating in simulated activities like buying and selling stocks, tracking stock performance, practicing dollar-cost averaging, and using investment apps.
Skills students need or will develop:
Financial Literacy: Students will develop an understanding of financial concepts such as stocks, bonds, risk management, and investment strategies.
Critical Thinking: They will learn to analyze market trends, evaluate investment opportunities, and make informed decisions about allocating their resources.
Mathematical Skills: Students will apply mathematical concepts such as percentages, fractions, and basic arithmetic in calculating returns, analyzing data, and managing investment portfolios.
Research and Analysis: They will learn to research companies, industries, and economic indicators to make informed investment decisions, as well as analyze the potential risks and rewards associated with different investments.
Decision Making: Students will practice decision-making skills by weighing the potential benefits and risks of various investment options, considering their financial goals and constraints, and making strategic investment choices.
These slides are meant to be used as a supplement resources to your Finance Friday so students can learn as they go. We realize they are not going to be investment experts when they start investing. These slides are just to build their knowledge. Use them as you see fit. Resource Lesson Slides
Goals For The Unit
Students' success will be evaluated based on their ability to effectively navigate a simulated stock market environment, including demonstrating proficiency in buying and selling stocks, tracking performance over time, and implementing strategies like dollar-cost averaging. Additionally, their understanding of financial concepts and risk management will be assessed through activities such as researching companies and analyzing market trends. Success will also be measured by students' engagement with modern investing tools and their ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practical investment scenarios using the simulations HTMW, dollar-cost averaging, and a 5 year birthday activity. This unit should improve their investment skills as the Financial Friday "Stock Market Challenge" progresses.
