Design Brief and Student Handout
General summary of unit:
The unit titled "Let Me Teach You" is designed to introduce students to the principles of teaching and ethics, with a focus on preparing them to be effective educators in various contexts, not just traditional classroom settings. Just to name a few careers that need good teaching skills are professions such as teaching, corporate training, executive coaching, speech therapy, sales training, leadership development, human resources management, financial advising, consulting, and healthcare education all involve teaching and coaching people.
Skills students need or will develop:
In the unit titled "Inspiring Future Educators: Exploring Teaching and Ethics," students are likely to develop several key skills. Here are five major skills that students may develop during this unit:
Teaching and Instructional Skills: Students will learn how to plan and deliver effective lessons, considering various teaching styles and techniques to engage learners.
Ethical Decision-Making: Through discussions, activities, and reflections, students will develop a deeper understanding of ethical principles and learn how to apply them in educational settings.
Communication and Presentation Skills: Students will enhance their ability to communicate ideas clearly and present lesson plans or concepts effectively to their peers and instructors.
Collaboration and Teamwork: Many activities in the unit involve group work and collaboration, helping students develop teamwork skills and the ability to work effectively with others.
Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving: Students will engage in scenarios, discussions, and projects that require them to think critically and make ethical decisions in real-world teaching situations.
Goals of the unit:
The final project in the unit aims to achieve several goals. It seeks to demonstrate students' teaching competence by showcasing their ability to create engaging lesson plans and deliver them effectively while integrating ethical principles. The project promotes respect and inclusivity, emphasizing the importance of diverse perspectives and backgrounds in the learning environment. Additionally, it encourages creativity, practical experience, and collaboration, ultimately fostering students' ability to inspire ethical behavior in their future students through innovative and reflective teaching practices. I would probable recommend pairs / once a topic is selected, match students up.
** IMPORTANT: If you already covered ethics, you could have the students still teach it, or you could have them pick something that interests them. Example you may have a group teach the class on: how to code a program, an artistic skill, yoga, a baking session, introduce basic photography concepts, jewelry making, paper mache, or sewing.
